I have done research at the Student Life Archives and have written several histories of University of Illinois fraternity chapters for the Society for the Preservation of Greek Housing. on their momentous day marking 110 years of service, aggressive tongue flicks, vicious neck rolls, world-shaking stomps and bae-stealing shenanigans as the beloved bad boys of the Divine 9. The dates are significant ones and the thesis is available on the top menu. It’s FOUNDERS’ DAY and very necessary that we celebrate the mighty men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. My Master’s thesis details the history of the fraternity system at Southern Illinois University Carbondale from 1948-1960. I wrote a dissertation on “Coeducation and the History of Women’s Fraternities 1867-1902.″ It chronicles the growth of the system and the birth of the National Panhellenic Conference. In this blog I will share the history of GLOs and other topics. I didn’t realize that I would end up feeling at home at one of the chapters. My roommate suggested I sign up for rush (as it was then called, today it’s known as recruitment) and go through the house tour round and then drop out of rush. When I made my way to Syracuse University, I saw the houses with the Greek letters that edged Walnut Park, and wished I could tour them. I am sure I would have agreed with them, too. I was the last person anyone would have suspected of joining a sorority in college. Welcome! Chances are good you found this blog by searching for something about fraternities or sororities. Several years after she left Wesleyan, the Adelphean Society took on Greek letters Alpha Delta Pi. Turns out that when she was at Wesleyan College, she was a member of the Adelphean Society. When I went looking for more information about her, I found this wonderful post on the Chi Omega website. She was initiated into Chi Omega by Sigma Chapter in January, 1902, and held offices in the chapter. She took a leading part in college affairs, was president all four years of the Class of 1904, a champion basketball player, and was voted the most beautiful girl in school. In 1900 she entered the Freshman Class of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, where she graduated with an A.B. In trying to find something to write about for Chi Omega’s Founders’ Day, I found this snippet about Emmie Lela Gramling in a 1905 Eleusis, She was:īorn in Atlanta, Ga., where she lived until entering Wesleyan College, Macon, Ga., in 1897. He crafted Chi Omega’s first badge out of dental gold. Richardson was known as “Sis Doc” to generations of Psi Chapter members (the founding chapter at Arkansas is known as the Psi Chapter) and he is counted as a founder. Charles Richardson, a Kappa Sigma, created the organization. Ina May Boles, Jean Vincenheller, Jobelle Holcombe, and Alice Simonds, with guidance from Fayetteville dentist, Dr. Florence Letcher’s hobby of collecting elephant figurines led to the animal becoming the sorority’s symbol. Chi Omega was founded on Apat the University of Arkansas. The 1913 Valedictorian and Class President, she married Frank Coleman, a founder of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
